Our Story

From a Church Basement
to Nine States

What started with 40 boxes of produce for 12 families in Covington, Kentucky has become one of the heartland's most innovative hunger-relief networks.

Founded 1998

How It Started

In the winter of 1998, Pastor James Hargrove and his wife Linda noticed families in their Covington neighborhood skipping meals so their children could eat. They started collecting surplus produce from nearby farms and distributing it from the basement of Grace Fellowship Church every Saturday morning.

Within a year, local farmers were donating truckloads of rescued produce, and volunteers from across the river in Cincinnati were showing up to help sort and pack. By 2002, the Hargroves incorporated HarvestBridge as a 501(c)(3) — formalizing a mission to connect surplus food with families in need, with dignity and choice at the center.
